CBA hires new tech chief – The Australian Financial Review

Commonwealth Bank of Australia has looked to the UK to find a new executive to lead its extensive technology operations, hiring London-based HSBC tech exec Gavin Munroe to be its new chief information officer.
Gavin Munroe will become Commonwealth Bank’s new chief information officer in November.
The post of CIO at CBA is a plum position in local tech executive circles, with the bank considered a leader among local companies in the deployment of technology, dating back to the early part of the century when it made great fanfare of investing billions of dollars in upgrading ageing legacy systems.
Mr Munroe will replace current Group Executive, Technology and Group Chief Information Officer, Pascal Boillat, who has been a relatively low profile incumbent of the role since joining from Deutsche Bank to take it on in 2018.
In a statement CBA said Mr Boillat would leave the bank in mid-November to return to the Northern Hemisphere and be closer to his family.
CBA chief executive Matt Comyn said Mr Boillat had made a significant contribution to the bank, having overseen major IT upgrades, accelerated the shift to cloud computing and introduced modern applications.
From a customer-facing perspective, the bank has pursued a “super app” strategy on Mr Boillat’s watch, whereby it has sought to bundle together numerous financial and non-banking services together on its main banking app.
Mr Munroe will move to Australia and take on the role at CBA from November 14, leaving HSBC where he is currently global CIO for its wealth and personal banking divisions.
Mr Comyn said Mr Munroe was a seasoned financial services technology leader with extensive experience in driving digital transformations.
“Gavin has a proven track record of delivering technology solutions at a global scale, managing and building strong teams, and leading large programs aligned to business strategies and goals,” he said.
